In many fantasy stories, familiars are mysterious, silent creatures—always present, but rarely heard. That’s … not how it works in Rowanswood.
Here, familiars have personalities as big as their Crones’, and plenty of attitude.
Meet the Familiars of Rowanswood
- Magnus the Cat: Olivia, the Fire Crone’s fluffy black cat is snark wrapped in fur. He demands breakfast on time, critiques her magical progress, and has perfected the art of disdainful silence. When he does speak, it’s usually to deliver the comment that makes everyone else laugh (or groan).
- Sid the Black Lab: Anthea, the Water Crone’s elderly familiar, short for Obsidian, brings calm and gravitas. He communicates telepathically with Anthea, with a dry wit that lands all the sharper for his dignified demeanor. He’s proof that magical companions can be both wise and warm.
- Gizmo the Parrot: Priya, the Earth Crone’s parrot has no filter. None. He heckles, gossips, and blurts out truths at the worst possible moments. But he’s also fiercely loyal—and surprisingly useful in a pinch.
- Nyko the Wolf: Elspeth, the Air Crone’s wolf familiar is quiet but commanding. He doesn’t waste words, but when he speaks, everyone listens. Loyal, cunning, and bound to Elspeth by deep magic, he represents the wild heart of Rowanswood.
More Than Sidekicks
Familiars aren’t pets. They’re protectors, confidants, and sometimes the voice of reason (or chaos) when their witches need it most. They reflect their witch’s nature, but they also challenge them.
Magnus isn’t just Olivia’s familiar—he’s her foil. He forces her to laugh when she’d rather wallow and face facts she’d rather just ignore (maybe they’ll go away then). Sid reminds Anthea to slow down. Gizmo keeps Priya honest (or at least entertained). Nyko anchors Elspeth with loyalty and strength, the steady presence at the edge of the wild.
Famous Familiars in Fantasy
Rowanswood’s familiars aren’t the first with oversized personalities. Familiars and magical companions have prowled through literature for centuries. Think of Crookshanks, Hermione’s shrewd ginger cat in Harry Potter. Or Salem, the sarcastic black cat from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Even Diana Wynne Jones gave us the moving scarecrow Turnip Head in Howl’s Moving Castle—not a traditional familiar, but a magical sidekick all the same.
What makes them memorable isn’t their magic—it’s their voices, their quirks, their humor. They remind us that magic is messy, funny, and very human. Rowanswood just gives them center stage.
A Bit of Humour, a Bit of Heart
Familiars with attitude add levity to danger, and heart to humour. They remind us that magic isn’t just about rituals and power struggles—it’s also about loyalty, companionship, and yes, the occasional sarcastic comment from a cat.
Your Turn
If you had a familiar, what would it be? A wise old owl? A mischievous fox? Or maybe a parrot who blurts out your secrets at the worst possible time? Tell me in the comments—I’d love to know.
